What is Advanced Rapid Transit (ART)?
Advanced Rapid Transit, or ART, is a high-quality, modern public transportation system that’s designed to move more people faster and farther.
VIA’s ART system, called VIA Rapid, is part of the Keep San Antonio Moving plan designed to deliver fast, frequent and reliable public transit, with vehicles traveling in dedicated lanes outside regular traffic, using bus-friendly traffic signals and offering off-board fare collection options for faster boarding.
The region’s first ART corridor, the VIA Rapid Green Line, connects neighborhoods and businesses from the San Antonio Airport area, along San Pedro Avenue, through downtown and south to the Missions area. A second proposed ART corridor, the VIA Rapid Silver Line, connects the East and West sides.
VIA Rapid will make getting around easier with improvements planned throughout the corridor.
We are making safety and infrastructure improvements to offer a better experience for people traveling on the new VIA Rapid Green Line corridor. Road resurfacing helps improve drainage and draw water away from bus stops and crosswalks. It also increase the lifespan and durability of the pavement, which will result in fewer repairs. We’re also providing better accessibility with level boarding at station locations, ramps and improved sidewalks for passengers in the disability community and people with limited mobility.
We’re building better service on an enhanced corridor.
An enhanced corridor begins with a plan for improvements that benefit everyone. Construction work will consist primarily of road repaving, intersection improvements, and other surface-level activities in manageable stages. This helps minimize disruptions to existing trafficc and the surrounding community while making progress on planned improvements. Preparing for construction begins in 2024 with utility location adjustments to move existing utilities like water, gas, electricity, and telecommunications equipment, in certain parts of the corridor. This helps ensure these services are not disrupted during construction. VIA’s plans will allow for business and neighborhood access and usual trafficc patterns during the project’s pre-construction phase.
Safety is still our top priority.
Considerations for everyone using the corridor, including pedestrians, motorists, people with mobility devices, bicyclists, and others, are part of the design process and included in the project. This includes maintaining safe and clearly marked walkways and paths to existing and temporary stops that may be set up during construction. Temporary access points or detour alternatives will be designated for business entrances or intersections as needed, and major work near access points will be scheduled outside regular business hours whenever possible.

KENS5: VIA's new rapid transit project to offer a similar service to light rail
By Kristen Dean
San Antonians will soon have a whole new way of getting around two major corridors of the city that mimics the service of light rail.
The Advance Rapid Transit (ART) project is VIA’s new line that establishes dedicated bus lanes to quickly get people up and down San Pedro Avenue, connecting the San Antonio International Airport to the north with the San Antonio Missions National Historic Park on the south side.

VIA Rapid Green Line Features
The VIA Rapid Green Line project will enhance safety and increase travel efficiency throughout the corridor by providing four miles of new and repaired sidewalks, 66 advanced traffic signals that will keep traffic flowing more smoothly, and more than 20 intersection upgrades. This investment will improve safety for everyone traveling through the corridor, whether they're driving, using transit, cycling, walking or using other mobility devices.
The VIA Rapid Green Line will connect the San Antonio Airport region on the North Side, through downtown, to areas around the San Antonio Missions Historical Park on the South Side. This will streamline commuting for riders, giving them easier access to residential areas, major businesses, schools, parks, community centers and cultural landmarks.
Not only can the passengers pay before boarding, but the boarding platform is at the same level as the vehicle entrance, making it easy and accessible.
VIA Rapid Green Line will quickly and efficiently connect people to jobs, educational institutions and training programs along its route, expanding economic opportunities for residents across the community.
San Antonio continues to be one of the fastest growing cities in the country. Traffic congestion and gridlock driven by population growth poses a challenge that requires strategic solutions. The VIA Rapid Green Line is an essential investment in our infrastructure, designed to effectively manage this growth by providing a modern transportation solution. With the support of federal funding, this project offers a economical response to our community’s evolving needs, ensuring a more efficient and effective transportation system for the future.
The VIA Rapid Green Line includes a design process that ensures projects are safe for all users and collaboratively involves the public and stakeholders to help shape effective transportation solutions while preserving and enhancing the surrounding community.
